ESS Vietnam Thermal Energy Storage (TES) Tank solution is a system that stores cold energy in the form of ice or chilled water, produced during off-peak hours (when electricity is cheap) and used to supply cooling load for air conditioning systems or central cooling during peak hours (when electricity is expensive).

Structure and Operating Mechanism​​​​​​

ESS Thermal Energy Storage Tanks are constructed from steel or concrete, filled with water, and fitted with polyethylene heat exchanger coils.

Charge: Produce and Store Cold Energy. During off-peak hours, the chiller cools glycol solution down to -4oC. This solution flows through the coils, freezing the surrounding water, thereby storing cold energy.

Discharge: Supply Cooling to Load. When cooling is needed (during peak hours), the ice in the tank melts. Glycol solution absorbs cold from the ice, then it is pumped to cooling equipment (AHU, FCU) at temperatures of 34-38oF (1.1-3.3oC).

  • TES Tanks reduce electricity demand during peak hours and therefore increase power plant generation capacity.
  • Many studies show that electrical energy is transmitted better during off-peak hours. Each kilowatt-hour of electricity shifted from peak to off-peak use reduces the fuel required to produce it (approximately 8% to 30%), simultaneously lowering power plant greenhouse gas emissions.
